a listen. >> i'm all ears. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley reporting tonight from denver. >> pelley: good evening, president obama and mitt romney meet here tonight on the stage behind me at the university of denver for their very first debate. the stakes are high because 34 days before the election this race is still up for grabs. the latest poll of likely voters by the "wall street journal" shows the president with a three-point lead over governor romney, 49% to 46%. but that's within the margin of but that's within the margin of error, so it's very nearly a tie. the debate tonight is the first chance voters are going to have to size up the candidates side by side. we have a team of campaign 2012 correspondents covering the debate, but first, the candidates themselves. we caught up with the president and governor romney on the campaign trail. mr. president, the race as we speak is essentially tied. i wonder, do you think this is going to come down to the debates? >> well, i don't think that any single factor ends up making a big difference.

of people and that's the main thing we're doing. captioning sponsored by cbs captioning sponsored by cb this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. 3ith just 33 days to go, the presidential election is suddenly looking a whole lot different than it did 24 hours ago. republican challenger mitt had ey did what he had to do in the first debate to turn his campaign around. have a look at our poll of cocommitted voters. voters who told us before the debate they had not made up their minds or could still change them. after watching the debate, 46% said governor romney won. less than half that thereby, 2%, said president obama won. 32% called it a tie. and look at this-- before the debate, only 30% of uncommitted voters said governor romney cares about their needs and problems. ebter the debate, that number more than doubled to 63%. on that same question, mr. obama's number went up as well, from 53% to 69. that was small consolation, though for a president whose debate performance has shaken up his campaign. we have reports tonight from our campaign 2012 team, an

and the highway patrol is preparing for traffic gridlock especially here in san francisco. cbs 5 traffic reporter elizabeth wenger joins us from san francisco to explain what areas to avoid. i guess everything. it is so busy. >> reporter: it is. that's the funny thing. the waterfront and the embarcadero, marina green, that's where a lot of stuff is going on. but yeah, there are so many events it's spread out throughout the city, north beach, castro district, unfortunately there's no great area traffic-wise this weekend. so this is going to be one of the busier spots. we are here along pier 30-32. it's dark but we have a big navy vessel you can tour for fleet week and in addition, if that wasn't enough, we have the america's cup sailing yachts behind me here, as well. so if yesterday was any indication, it's going to be very busy and loud this saturday and sunday. the blue angels practiced yesterday. don't drive. parking even if you get here will be extra difficult. to avoid gridlock, avoid the waterfront, use less popular bridges like the san mateo bridge. if fleet week and america's cup weren't
